Dorking's Olympic Dream

Dorking Museum haven't let the fact that the only visitors in the Museum at the moment are builders and workmen stop them from contributing to Heritage Open Weekend. They have taken over The Pickwick Room at White Horse Hotel to stage an exhibition called Dorking's Olympic Dream.

We have been working closely with Mole Valley Council and the organizers of Heritage Open Weekend for the last few months to stage an Exhibition that will be interest both to Olympic fans and the people of Dorking.  Many people came forward after the appeal in the Dorking Advertiser including; John Beer an ex Dorking St Paul's Athletic Club runner who had a full set of Athletic programmes from the 1948 Olympics. The family of Walter Wareham; who was the Clark Of The Course; have lent us photos and artefacts from Wareham's career. Most exciting for the people of Dorking; we have been lent one of the 1948 Olympic Torches.  John Williams handed over the flame to Ted Henton in front of the White Horse Hotel - and we are very proud to announce that Mark Henton has lent his Father's torch to the Exhibition.

The Exhibition will also feature a series of panels written by local Athlete Ruth Haynes, a member of Junior Team Great Britain. She has produced an account of Athletic life in 1948 compared to now. Marion Rodgers and Claire Flanagan have been busy collecting memories from those who remember the Torch passing through Dorking in 1948 - and what people are looking forward to in 2012.

The Exhibition will run from 10am - 5pm on Saturday 10th September and 2pm - 5pm on Sunday 11th September.
